Naan is a delicious flat bread warmed with garlic herb butter and used to sop up sauces or soup. It's easier to make than you think and oh so delicious.
½ cup warm water
2 tsp yeast
1 tsp sugar
2 ½ cups flour
½ tsp salt
¼ cup olive oil
⅓ cup yogurt
1 egg
Pour warm water into a stand mixing bowl, add yeast and sugar and let proof for one minute. Add flour, salt, olive oil, yogurt and the egg. Mix together for 2 minutes on medium low speed. The dough will be smooth and a bit sticky. Scrape down sides of the mixing bowl, cover with plastic wrap and allow the dough to rise for about an hour in a warm draft free place (like the oven with the light on).
Sprinkle a rolling surface with a light dusting of flour, with a rolling pin, roll the dough into a circle and cut into 8 equal pieces with a pizza cutter. Work each piece of dough into a ball and roll out flat about ¼ inch thick.
Preheat a large heavy bottomed skillet over medium heat with a bit of olive oil. Cook the bread for a couple of minutes. When ready to flip over the bread will be golden in color and will have large bubbles. Cook the other side for another couple of minutes until golden. Place warm cooked naan on a baking sheet in a low temp oven to just keep warm. Spoon garlic cilantro butter over the top, sprinkle with sea salt and serve warm.
Garlic Cilantro Butter:
½ cup butter, melted
3 cloves garlic, diced
3 Tbsp cilantro, minced
2 green onions, sliced
Mix garlic and herbs into the melted butter and keep warm to spread on the naan.
